  • Closing Thoughts: Your Luxury London Weekend Starts Here

Looking for the best restaurants in London without the queues, the tourist traps or the souvenir-shop chaos? You’re in the right place. This 2026 guide rounds up four of the capital’s most exclusive addresses: a Michelin-starred cellar counter in Soho, a hidden espionage cocktail bar in Whitehall, a two-Michelin-star landmark in Shoreditch and a candlelit thermal bathhouse in Covent Garden. Together they make a brilliant shortlist of top restaurants London has to offer, plus one very welcome place to put your feet up.

London is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most captivating cities. Even if you’re well-travelled and have been to other capital cities, like Tokyo, Washington, D.C., and more, you cannot deny that London is world-famous for good reason; primarily for its much-revered cultural landmarks and historical heritage. But today, I want to talk about something else. London is one of those places that’s so enormous and sprawling that there really is something for everyone – especially anyone who’s looking to live a life of luxury.

Beyond Big Ben and the Tower of London, you can find a more discreet world, soaked in elegance, where hidden upmarket drinking dens, fine art galleries, and exclusive dining rooms offer a slightly different perspective on the capital. No crowds. No Union Jack-covered souvenirs. In this article, we’re going to limit ourselves to the most sophisticated spots for those who are looking to spend a glamorous weekend in London.

A quick note before you book: opening hours, menus and prices change often at venues like these, so always confirm details on the official website or by phone before you travel.

Evelyn’s Table, Soho: One of the Best Restaurants in London for an Intimate Tasting Menu

Evelyn’s Table Soho London nightlife scene featuring illuminated theatre signs, historic buildings and busy streets in London's vibrant Soho district.

Where better to start than Soho? Easily one of the most vibrant areas of the city, here you’ll find Evelyn’s Table: an exclusive fine dining restaurant with an intimate, ‘chef’s counter’ setting and understated buzz that creates the perfect atmosphere for a luxury date night. The kitchen is led by acclaimed chef Seamus Sam, whose five-course tasting menu takes inspiration from modern British and French cuisine and changes throughout the year.

The overall experience feels more personal than theatrical. Though you have a front-row seat to the kitchen, the focus of the dishes themselves is more on the carefully considered presentation, homegrown ingredients, and attentive service from the front-of-house team. Seating at the restaurant is extremely limited, so the atmosphere carries with it this exclusive feeling that you’re truly a part of a culinary occasion, rather than visiting a conventional restaurant. The only negative is that you will need to book months in advance.

History and Overview

Evelyn’s Table opened in February 2018 in the basement of The Blue Posts, a Grade II-listed Soho pub on Rupert Street whose roots go back some 250 years. It was created by siblings Layo and Zoe Paskin, the team behind The Palomar and The Barbary, who dug into the original beer cellar to build a tiny counter restaurant beneath the pub. Above it sit the ground-floor pub and The Mulwray, a first-floor wine bar. The restaurant earned its first Michelin star in 2022 and has held it since.

Today the room seats just 12 guests around a marble counter, so you’ll watch every plate being finished a metre from your elbow. The wine list is deliberately short and sharp, with wine, sake and low-alcohol pairings on offer to match the cooking.

Signature Dishes and Drinks

  • Five-course seasonal tasting menu – British produce cooked with French and Asian technique, changing through the year
  • Peking-style mallard and Cornish pollack – two dishes that have been singled out in recent write-ups (menus rotate, so expect variations)
  • Wine, sake or ‘Little or None’ pairings – a short, adventurous list chosen to follow each course
  • Pre-dinner drink upstairs – arrive early and settle in at The Mulwray or The Blue Posts pub

The Spy Bar: A Secret Cocktail Den Among London’s Top Places to Drink

In an article like this, it was only a matter of time until we ended up in Westminster. Found within the grand surroundings of The OWO (the historic War Office building in Whitehall), The Spy Bar offers a sophisticated experience that all revolves around – you guessed it – espionage. This refined take on the clandestine experience draws its inspiration from the building’s intriguing history, creating a themed atmosphere that feels a little more distinct than the average luxury bar.

Here, you can expect to find polished interiors and expertly crafted cocktails, both shaken and stirred, in an intimate environment that lends itself to special occasions, intimate date nights, and everything in between. Although its theming might seem totally off the wall on paper, when you’re seated and sipping on a delicious cocktail, you’ll find yourself enjoying just how understated the place feels.

History and Overview

The Old War Office was once the headquarters of Britain’s armed forces administration, and in 2023 it reopened as Raffles London at The OWO. The Spy Bar occupies two former rooms numbered 006 and 007, which in the early twentieth century served as high-security storage for the identity papers and mission reports of MI5 and MI6 agents. The entrance lobby was once a guard room, and other rooms along the corridor were used to brief and debrief agents.

You can’t simply wander in off Whitehall. The bar sits deep in the building’s lower floors, so a member of staff leads you there, and photography is famously not allowed inside. Think of it as a good excuse to put your phone away and actually enjoy the drink.

Signature Drinks

  • The Signature Vesper – a nod to Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale, made with a house vermouth blend, No.3 Gin and honey distilled at the bar
  • The Double O Seven – a martini-meets-gimlet creation with coconut oil, rhubarb and absinthe
  • The Stinger – a classic reworked for the Spy Bar menu
  • The Spy Bar Tasting Experience – three spy-inspired cocktails with three matched canapés, guided by the bartenders

The Clove Club London: Shoreditch’s Two-Michelin-Star Landmark

The Clove Club London signature crispy fried chicken dish served on fresh pine branches at The Clove Club restaurant in London.

Luxury dining isn’t just confined to Soho. Unless you’re lucky enough to find a car park in London, you’ll probably need to get the tube across to Shoreditch if you want to find The Clove Club, one of the city’s most refined culinary hideaways. Set inside the historic Shoreditch Town Hall, it is now a fine dining restaurant, well-known for its tasting menu that’s designed to celebrate fresh seasonal produce and classic dishes, but with imaginative combinations and precise execution.

Going to East London also makes for a change of scenery that, despite what you might think, is actually an appealing alternative to the city’s other (frankly more predictable) fine dining districts. After a memorable culinary experience, you can explore Shoreditch’s nightlife, which is full of independent bars and speakeasies. This one is probably a better pick for those who want their London itinerary to feel more modern and culturally rich.

History and Overview

The Clove Club opened in March 2013 in Shoreditch Town Hall, a Grade II-listed Victorian building that dates back to 1866 and began life as the local vestry hall. It grew out of a supper club run upstairs at The Ten Bells pub by chef Isaac McHale, an Orkney-born, Glasgow-raised cook who trained at The Ledbury and Noma, together with front-of-house partners Daniel Willis and Johnny Smith. The trio crowdfunded the move to the Town Hall and have never looked back.

It has gone on to collect two Michelin stars and a place on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list (No. 35 in 2022 and No. 38 in 2023). Despite the accolades, the room is relaxed for its calibre, with a blue-tiled open kitchen and a wine list that champions artisanal growers. If you’re building a list of the best places to eat in London, this is the one that proves fine dining doesn’t need stiff tablecloths.

Signature Dishes

  • Buttermilk fried chicken with pine salt – the dish that made Isaac McHale’s name, and a long-time signature
  • Raw Orkney scallop with hazelnut, clementine and truffle
  • Flamed Cornish mackerel – a signature highlighted by The World’s 50 Best
  • Veal sweetbread baked in hay, served with aromatic brown butter
  • Braeburn apple tarte tatin – a classic way to finish

The menu changes with the seasons, so treat these as favourites that have appeared over the years rather than a guaranteed line-up.

AIRE Ancient Baths London: A Candlelit Thermal Escape in Covent Garden

Eaire Ancient Baths Londono featuring a tranquil turquoise thermal pool, historic brick arches and atmospheric candlelit interiors in London.

We couldn’t finish this list without telling you all about the best place to put up your feet. The AIRE Ancient Baths offer an extraordinary escape from the hustle and bustle that can be found outside. Its exposed brick walls, flickering candlelight, and exquisite thermal pools all contribute to an atmosphere of complete, unadulterated tranquillity.

If you’re bored of the more polished atmosphere that you might associate with a conventional hotel spa, then AIRE Ancient Baths are probably exactly what you’re looking for. Its rustic aesthetic gives the place a feeling of complete comfort, and guests are permitted to move freely between pools that are set to different temperatures and indulge in massages and bathing experiences.

I’d particularly recommend this to couples who are looking for a romantic retreat, or to travellers who have spent a lot of time on the road or in the air.

History and Overview

AIRE Ancient Baths London opened in summer 2021 and was the brand’s first UK site, following locations in Spain and further afield. It is tucked into the vaults beneath an 18th-century townhouse in the Adelphi district, designed in the Neoclassical style by Robert Adam and once home to J. M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan. The experience is inspired by Roman, Greek and Ottoman bathing traditions, with candlelit chambers and a number of pools at different temperatures, including a very cold plunge and a steam room.

Numbers are capped per session to keep things calm, and the standard Thermal Bath Experience lasts 90 minutes. Nine treatment rooms downstairs handle everything from a relaxing massage to the wine-bath rituals the spa is known for.

Signature Experiences

  • The Ancient Bath Experience – a 90-minute journey at your own pace through the thermal pools
  • The Signature Wine Experience – a massage followed by a private red wine soak, with wine and cheese
  • The Himalayan Salt Ritual – a scrub and massage using warmed salt stones
  • Couples’ massages – the baths combined with a side-by-side treatment, ideal for a romantic afternoon

1. Raffles London at The OWO (Whitehall)

The obvious choice if you’re visiting The Spy Bar: it’s the same building. Raffles London at The OWO is the first Raffles hotel in the city, set within the former Old War Office with Horse Guards Parade directly outside. Expect 120 individually styled rooms and suites, several restaurants and bars, and a multi-floor spa with an indoor pool. Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, St James’s Park and Trafalgar Square are all within walking distance.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the best restaurants in London for a luxury experience?

The best restaurants in London for a luxury night out depend on your mood. For an intimate Michelin-starred counter, book Evelyn’s Table in Soho. For two Michelin stars in a relaxed setting, The Clove Club in Shoreditch is a standout. For cocktails with a story, The Spy Bar at The OWO is hard to beat, and AIRE Ancient Baths London is the place to unwind afterwards.

2. Do I need to book these venues in advance?

Yes. Evelyn’s Table has only 12 seats and often books out well ahead, The Clove Club is popular at weekends, The Spy Bar is best reserved, and AIRE limits the number of guests per session. Book as early as your plans allow.

3. What are the best places to eat in London for a date night?

Evelyn’s Table and The Clove Club both deliver romantic, special-occasion dining. For a more playful evening, pair a drink at The Spy Bar with dinner nearby, or book a couples’ session at AIRE Ancient Baths London.

4. How much does The Clove Club London cost?

Tasting menus at The Clove Club are listed on OpenTable from around £225 for the short menu and about £285 for the classic menu, before drinks and service. Prices change, so check the official website. A shorter lunch option is also offered on selected days.

5. Is The Spy Bar easy to find?

Not on purpose. The bar is in the lower levels of The OWO, and a member of staff leads you down when you arrive. Photography is not permitted inside. Reservations are recommended; call +44 (0)20 3907 7500.

6. Can I take children to these venues?

Not really. Evelyn’s Table, The Spy Bar and The Clove Club are all adult-oriented, and AIRE Ancient Baths London has a minimum age of 18. If you’re travelling with family, there are plenty of relaxed alternatives among the top restaurants London offers.

7. What should I know before visiting AIRE Ancient Baths London?

Arrive 30 minutes early, bring swimwear (it’s compulsory), and leave valuables in the lockers. Robes, towels and slippers are provided. Phones and cameras are only allowed in reception, and the baths aren’t suitable during pregnancy.

8. Is it easy to drive and park near these restaurants?

Driving in central London is expensive and slow, and none of the four venues has dedicated parking. The Tube or a taxi is much easier. If you do drive, use the paid car parks listed in each section above, and check TfL for congestion charge and ULEZ rules.

Closing Thoughts: Your Luxury London Weekend Starts Here

I couldn’t possibly include all of my favourites here, but I wanted to provide a variety of different venues that appeal to different palates. Most of the time, London’s best luxury experiences start behind an ordinary door and surprise you when you step inside.

The main advice I can offer is to plan ahead. Most of these places tend to be pretty exclusive, so there is zero chance that you can rock up on the day and expect a table – unless you’re a crown prince or a rock star.

Whether you choose a Soho counter, a Whitehall speakeasy, a Shoreditch icon or a candlelit soak, you’ll be experiencing some of the best restaurants in London and some of its most memorable hidden corners. Pick your favourite, book early, and give yourself time to enjoy it.
