❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Hikkaduwa’s shallow reef areas and calm, clear water make it one of Sri Lanka’s safest spots for first-time divers. All six centres on this list employ PADI-certified instructors who run Discovery Scuba sessions in water as shallow as 5–8 metres. You receive a full briefing and hands-on pool or shallow-water training before you go near any reef. Children as young as 10 can join Discovery Scuba programmes at centres like International Diving School.
The main diving season on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast runs from November to April, with peak visibility from December to March. The water temperature stays around 27–29°C year-round. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings rough seas and reduced visibility. During these months, operators like Poseidon, Hikka Deep Blue, and Blue Deep shift their operations to Trincomalee on the north-east coast, where conditions are excellent.
Most centres complete the PADI Open Water Diver course in three to four days. Day one covers theory and pool work. Days two and three take you through four open-water dives on the reef. Some centres offer e-learning, which lets you complete all theory online before you arrive, cutting the course down to two intensive days in the water. At the end, you receive a globally recognised PADI certification that lets you dive anywhere in the world.
Hikkaduwa rewards divers with a rich variety of marine life. Green sea turtles are common at nearly every dive site and often swim right up to divers. The reef is home to moray eels, barracuda, pufferfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, clownfish, and surgeonfish. On lucky days, you might spot reef sharks, rays, and even whale sharks during the right season. The famous shipwrecks host shoals of fusiliers, lobsters, and crayfish that have colonised the wrecks over decades.
No. All six centres provide full rental equipment, including masks, fins, wetsuits, BCDs, and regulators. They regularly service and replace gear to meet PADI safety standards. If you own your own equipment, you are welcome to bring it, but most divers find the rental gear perfectly adequate. A few centres also rent underwater cameras and torches for an extra fee. Just bring a swimsuit, sunscreen, and a towel.
International Diving School and Blue Deep Diving Center (PADI Resort) both actively cater to families. International Diving School runs supervised PADI courses for children from age 10, and the instructors are well-known for their patience. Blue Deep Diving Center stocks dedicated children’s equipment and offers beginner-friendly sessions in shallow, calm water. For snorkelling only, Hikka Deep Blue offers a life jacket option, which is perfect for younger kids or non-swimmers who still want to see the reef.
